One method of alleviating world hunger and poverty is through improved irrigation. A major challenge in providing irrigation, however, is water scarcity, especially in lower income countries. While traditional practices of flood and drip irrigation are commonly used in developing countries, these practices are highly dependent on the availability of water and exhibit particularly low irrigation efficiencies. Our solution is focused on controlling agricultural water use for farmers in developing countries. We have developed a completely passive non-electric irrigation control system (PICS) which uses soil water potential (or soil pressure) to determine the optimal schedule to irrigate a farm.

We are equipping rural marginalized schools with our patented solar-powered cook stove that permits around the clock cooking, by tapping the sun’s energy and storing it in a repurposed oil tank with waste motor oil as an effective carbon sink tank. This eliminates the need of firewood by 100%. The stove is affordable and provides heat energy even during rainy seasons. We license our technology to already existing boiler fabricators and Jua Kali artisans who engineer and distribute the stoves saving schools 100% cooking cost-money. The money saved equips science and computer laboratories to offer quality education to students.
Inteco works in the menstrual hygiene ecosystem and focuses on the distribution and supply chain management of donated sanitary pads to adolescent girls in schools. We firm up the value chain by eradicating any human interference, ensure that sanitary pads are being used by the intended user, and create cheaper systems for accountability and monitoring. We do this by installing sanitary pads dispensers in schools, which allows students to get a pad when they need it using NFC cards.

Every year, farmers in sub-saharan Africa lose up to 30% of their grains valued at $4 billion to post-harvest losses. One cause of this is the storage of grains at incorrect moisture levels because they don't have simple, low-cost tools to measure grain moisture before storage. They usually resort to subjective means of measuring moisture content which are often inaccurate. Our solution, GrainMate, is a low-cost grain moisture tester which helps grain farmers reduce post-harvest losses by making it easy for them to accurately measure their grain moisture content before storage. At $100, GrainMate Grain Moisture Meter is over four times cheaper than conventional grain moisture meters on the market while offering superior accuracy.
"MaziwaPlus Pre-Chiller, previously known as MaziwaPlus Cooling Systems, is a mobile solar powered chilling on transit system that can be mounted on motorbikes for producers and dairy cooperatives for quality control, traceability, and maximized profits. This is in response to milk post-harvest losses due to lack of affordable cooling infrastructure for the highly perishable milk produce that is transported over great distances in rural Kenya. Rejection of milk at factory gate and no evening milk collection has led to continued revenue losses for small holder dairy farmers. In the last year, we have been able to impact over 800 households and increase their revenues by 32%, cut power consumption to processors, and 100% deliver quality, fresh milk. The product is communally shared at aggregation centers and through a real-time, mobile milk collection application.

SAYeTECH produces multi-crop threshers that use business model innovation to enhance food security and empower the poor. Our two main objectives are to reduce grain (sorghum, rice, maize, soybean and millet) wastage that could feed our future and to empower poor grain farmers with the multi-thresher that can reduce post-harvest losses of by up to 30%, providing enough food to feed Africa’s growing population. Simultaneously the multi-crop thresher will also be increasing the income of smallholder farmers, especially women, by up to 50% every year.
Solar home systems and minigrids have taken East Africa, Bangladesh, and other markets by storm. As off grid and “bad grid” households climb the energy ladder, they demand new appliances -- especially “productive” appliances that generate supplemental income. Over 70% of families in Tanzania raise chickens for supplemental income and nutrition, but most have subsistence flocks that rely on natural egg incubation and provide small and volatile profits. Through mutual partnership with solar home system and minigrid companies, Kukua enables stable growth of otherwise volatile family income by making at-home artificial chicken egg incubation affordable and viable.
Over 20 million farmers in the Asia-Pacific region rely on small-scale aquaculture for food security and income. Their yields are less than industrial ponds due to low dissolved oxygen (DO) levels in the water. We have developed a wind-powered aeration system, WERLWind, which can accomplish aeration in ponds sustainably. WERLWind is a floating surface aerator consisting of a vertical axis wind turbine coupled to an impeller underwater. Wind energy is converted to mechanical energy by the turbine which rotates the impeller. This induces circulation inside the pond, limiting DO losses to atmosphere, distributing DO uniformly and improving overall DO content.
Low-cost drinking water filters are typically limited to bacteria removal, even though low-income people worldwide are disproportionately affected by rising levels of chemical contamination. Additionally, shipping expensive bottled water is common in emergency disaster relief. For ~$30 USD, Aguadapt builds off of our certified ceramic filter to solve these issues. The family-sized system is robust, deploys rapidly, and can be quickly installed in all common containers – providing safe drinking water for over three years. Aguadapt removes organic chemicals and 99.9999% of pathogens. It can be adapted with universal hardware to treat regionally-relevant contaminants like arsenic, lead, or fluoride.
